We strive to ensure students have access to social-emotional resources to tend to their basic needs and support their academic success. Our Mental Health Support Services team provides social-emotional support for students who are experiencing stress, anxiety, and many other challenges related to mental health.

Multi-Tiered Systems of Support

Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a comprehensive framework designed to help our schools identify and assist students who may be struggling. By focusing on the whole child, MTSS not only addresses academic growth but also supports students' behavioral, social, emotional, and attendance needs. This proactive approach ensures that every student receives the timely and effective support they need to succeed.

Incorporated within MTSS is Response to Intervention (RTI), a system that helps schools support students who are struggling academically. The RTI system is structured in three tiers, providing increasingly targeted interventions to meet the individual academic and behavioral needs of students.

Wellness Centers

Wellness Centers are spaces at school sites outside of the traditional class setting where students can come and engage with wellness activities, develop healthy practices, learn about their mental health, discuss their concerns with caring staff, and reset if needed. We understand that students are able to focus on their learning when their social and emotional needs are also being met. Services provided by our wellness centers include the following:

Kimochis - Social and Emotional Learning

Kimochis (Japanese for "feelings") is a social-emotional intervention that teaches students how to identify feelings, methods for hard-to-have feelings, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Kimochis use characters as communication tools for the following social and emotional skills:

  • Unpredictable moods
  • Regulating tone of voice, body language, words, and actions
  • Fear of change
  • Positive social and academic risks
  • Positive self-talk
  • Setting appropriate boundaries
  • Self-regulating internal and external distractions
  • Having more patience and tolerance
  • Apologizing and forgiving
  • Making safe, wise, kind choices
  • Overcoming discouragement
