Our Namesake
Jesse M. Bethel's legacy is a testament to resilience, integrity, and commitment to education. Born in Harlem and orphaned at a young age, he overcame racial injustices and graduated as valedictorian despite segregated schooling under Jim Crow Laws. His determination led him to become a chemist at Mare Island Naval Shipyard during World War II, where he advanced to Head Chemist of the Nuclear Power division, a first for an African American at the base. Beyond his career, Mr. Bethel contributed to the community as a successful insurance agent and served on the Vallejo City Unified School District Governing Board, becoming its president in 1970. His influence culminated in naming Jesse Bethel High School, honoring his lifelong dedication to education and leadership.
